Annoying popup cmd.exe "FINDSTR cannot find the path specified"

Writer Andrew Mclaughlin

I recently installed a Driver Booster software to detect and install out of date drivers. since installing, I have been getting a popup for a split second every hour or so. as it appears and disappears so quickly, I used a screen recorder so I could find out what it was. It seems that the Driver Booster software, that I have since uninstalled, seems to have triggered something.

The text of cmd.exe starts off:

FINDSTR: Cannot open c:\ProgramData\acer\updater2\updater2.xml
The sysytem cannot find the path specified.
Cannot access file c:\Program Files\DriverSetupUtility\FUB\+
FINDSTR: Cannot open c:\ProgramData\packard bell\updater2\updater2.xml

any help appreciated.

There must be a Startup Object or Service that triggers this event. Check both (Task Manager - Startup and Win+R - services.msc) to find any obsolete entries related to Driver Booster and delete / disable them. If you aren't sure how to do that you can use a 3rd party uninstaller (Like Revo Uninstaller or Your Uninstaller!) that will scan your registry and get rid of obsolete entries. Their use is pretty straight forward.

I noticed a service running at startup called "FUB_send" which was similarly mentioned in the cmd.exe string.

A quick search didn't really shed any light on it however I suspect it was linked to the driver update software (driver booster) recently installed considering it started the same time.

Decided to disable and delete it (after creating a restore point) and the popup hasn't appeared since. Then used CCleaner and AVG tune up to clean out any broken links / tidy up the registry etc.

Everything appears back to normal now.
